Telluride Colorado

The Telluride Magazine was just an idea that came out of publishing the Telluride Times Newspaper.

I think we’d seen that Aspen and Vail had magazines and it seemed that Telluride ought to have one, so we just started it.

Against my wife’s advice, I hired John Arnold to be the manager of the magazine. He had gotten into some trouble and needed a job and I agreed without really thinking much about it. John was from Kansas and although I hadn’t known him until he showed up in Telluride that was enough for me.

Our first issue had a picture of Jerry and Pam Race cross country skiing out on the Valley Floor with the mountains as a great back drop. I think it was maybe twenty-four pages and was published in full color. There wasn’t much in the way of advertising and due to the poor quality of the printing, I don’t think we collected much in revenue.

Since, we had the ability to do all our typesetting, layout and writing in-house at the newspaper it was pretty easy to put it together.
One of Karen’s childhood friends, Regis Griffey, had moved to Telluride and was working for us at the newspaper. As it turned out, she and John Arnold got married and I guess we gave them the magazine as a wedding present.
