The University of Montana is known for its Forestry school. It is arguably one of the best in the world. When I first signed up for Recreation Resource Management as a major I had no idea what it actually was. Being a Bachelor of Science degree my first two years where spent in biology, chemistry, dendrology, calculus, and other science classes that I would normally have avoided. In the end it was a great experience. My last two years of school where spent on Recreation classes.
I soon discovered that Recreation Resource Management focuses not on recreation as much as it does on the resource. We studied the endangered species act, roadless areas, wilderness areas, National Parks, and United States Forest Service (USFS) Policy. How to manage for user conflict, and still protect the resource. Most People do not realize under the original USFS policy recreation is a mistake. When the land was originally set aside it was a forestry reserve. If this mistake did no occure ski areas like Telluride would not exist!
